Hopkins is in a pretty scary part of town, and you have to be brave or own a samurai sword (apparently) to live near campus...

From the Baltimore Sun newspaper article:

Based on the initial investigation, the student killed the man with only one strike of the sword...
the (49-year-old-deceased) had 29 prior convictions ... and had been released Saturday from the Baltimore County Detention Center...
(after serving 12 months of an 18 month sentence on the latest --one of his previous crimes was pulling a gun on a cop).

We can't keep a guy like this behind bars, and as a result this kid is going to be living with the memories of this day for the rest of his life.
