I'm in no way defending or supporting sex offenders, but as a supporter of basic human rights, I think it's sick and twisted to see a violation of these rights celebrated as a 'victory' so that someone can get or keep a seat in public office.

I personally think chemical castration should be an option left open for people to choose, or perhaps even suggested or recommended by health care professionals to some sex offenders, but I think mandatory treatment is wrong.
I seriously believe that pedophiles have become the new "homosexual" (a la early 20th century, etc). What I mean is, they are wired the way they are, yet because of that, people will mistreat them. They have a problem (and it's only a problem because it is harmful to children) but they are still treated as second class because of the way they are wired, sexually, even if they don't act on it.

Now I will never defend the actions of one if they do rape a child, but I am sure that many do feel attracted to younger children and don't act on it because of their morals and don't even mention it for fear of a witch hunt against them.

I've heard people call for killing those "sick bastards" and other such things, even if they did nothing wrong, just because they are made this way. I think that is deplorable. It's no different than those who want to kill those homosexual "sick bastards". These people think what they are is disgusting, and that it goes against what is "normal" and "natural", and so they lash out. The people that rail against pedophiles in such a way are exhibiting the exact same behavior, in my opinion.

"Human Rights" has come to be term used so loosely in argument that it has, in many cases, lost meaning. A human's rights do not extend beyond the individual. Once you start infringing on other people's rights, such in the cases of molestation and rape, you've gone beyond your rights and make he choice to be punished.

Oh, and lets not forget about this.

I don't think it is comparable. When people think pedophile they think someone who commits sexual actions against a child, not just a sexual preference. It is a matter of diction. It is kinda like the word homophobe. It has been tossed around so often that no one really knows what it means anymore.

Not sure on this, but don't psychologists also make a distinction between someone attracted to sexually mature, but underage kids, vs. someone who's atrracted to preteens and younger?

At any rate, with the number of overturned convictions over here I'd be hard pressed to support such a sweeping measure.
