Trying to wrap my brain around how a truck pulls up to a house, and pumps 100 gallons of oil into it when they aren't outfitted for oil storage?

Presumably there was a fitting they used to connect the truck and the house. Yet they had no storage? Why would anyone have an oil pump fitting without storage? The article makes it sound like the driver just stuck a hose through a crawlspace window, and let fly. That can't be the case.

this happened to my neighbors house a few years ago when I lived in a different town. The house used to have an oil tank or gas tank of some sort but no longer in use and pulled the tank out but the fitting was still attached to the home for filling.

The neighbor on the other side of them had requested a refill of their tank and the driver went to the wrong house connected his truck to the fitting and filled there basement with at least 50 gallons or more completely destroying all the contents of the basement and making the home unliveable for a good 2 weeks while they had it professionally cleaned by hazard waste clean up crew.

lol. It happenned to me a few years ago. I had had the oil pipe diverted from a 250 gallon tank in the basement to a 550 gallon tank out back. When the driver pumped 3oo gallons, he realized he was at the wronk house and he thought he was filling the basement with oil. But he tracked me down at my job. I told him I'd pay the lowest rate I could find in the newspaper and he was SO happy. He said he would definitely lose his job if I didn't pay, and he admitted that I didn't have to pay anything if I didn't want to.

Forgive me for asking, but what do people use 100 gallons of oil for, in or around the house?
I've heard of people with gas tanks, but I assume you don't use oil for warming your house.
