 Sex offenders in the woods
Sex offenders in the woods
A small group of homeless sex offenders have set up camp in densely wooded area behind a suburban Atlanta office park, directed there by probation officers who say it's a place of last resort for those with nowhere else to go. picked by drogue 2 months ago

As terrible the things they may have done are, they're still people.

They deserve punishment. But they're human, like me and you. For past crimes, crimes we don't know the details of, they shouldn't be made homeless. They are still paying (Rightly so) by having to stay away from areas with children and other restrictions.

Maybe I'm a soft touch, but I think most of these people will have been abused themselves. I believe some people are truly evil and are actual monsters. But not every person who commits a sex crime is.

There are a lot of ways to get on that list.

That aside, does anyone think that living in the woods without access to showers, toilet facilities, counseling and other services will help anyone? Dehumanization and stress is the quickest way for this mentality to propagate itself.

Does anyone really think that forcing mentally unbalanced individuals into a survival mentality can be good for anyone involved?

This will really help them keep their minds off re-offending and lead constructive lives.

Sex Offenders in the Woods? That was the name of our local rock band way back when.

You know, this whole thing really pisses me off. I grew up 15 minutes away from there, and although I agree that true sex offenders (rapists, pedophiles, and not adolescents who let their hormones get the better of them) are somewhat exempt from the whole "paid your debt to society" angle (mostly due to the paltry sentences many of them serve, and the arbitrarily-long ones kids sometimes serve), this kind of sh*t doesn't make sense. Transfer those you can, d*cks.

"Go to the woods -- you can't be anywhere near where normal people go about their lives...Wait -- Nope, you can't stay in the woods."

"Can I go back to my wife in Virgina?"

"Nope. You have to stay here...But, nowhere near here."

F*cking d*cks. I've really tried to warm back up to the suburban South since I left it, but sh*t like this reminds me how petty, hypocritical, and narrow-minded the people "in charge" can be where I come from.

Again, not excusing the parolees' actions, but I can guarantee 95% of the authorities involved identify as Christians. Not a knock against Christianity, but against the ugly "I got mine, you're on your own" brand that pervades so much of it since the fundamentalist "health and wealth" movement took over.

Believe it or not, Atlanta winters can kill a human if left exposed. Not as many as farther north, but being forced to sleep in rags through humid freezing weather is inhumane. Ask many a Civil War soldier. And they're not even giving them that?

Shame on them.
