Dog from 9/11 Search and Rescue Unit dies
A German shepherd named Taz, who was almost 2 years old when he was assigned from the city police’s K-9 unit to do search and rescue at the World Trade Center after the 9/11 attack, has died.

RIP TAZ, you served your country and community well.:( picked by horsefeathers 2 months ago

RIP. Interesting to me because I bought a house last year in the town I grew up in. When we first looked at the house the realtor needed to give the family extra notice so they could make plans to leave with their dog, which was a German Shepherd that had many health issues and mental issues which caused the dog to be mean/aggressive. It turns out the dog was a 9/11 rescue dog that saved 4 people during recovery missions. We found out at the closing that the dog passed away a few weeks before because of all the problems he had from being down in the city doing rescue missions. The family left a card here in memory of the hero dog that we found after the closing.

My friend was at Ground zero as well, with his rescue dog. By Sept 12th, there were no victims to save. Only a handful of people were rescued after it happened.

It was mostly a recovery.

My friend is still quite sick from what he breathed in as well. I shudder to think what everyone was exposed to.

His dog never worked after 911. She did not want to, her heart wasn't in it. The effects of such a massive search and the depression that followed that she never found anyone at all alive, was too much for her.

My friend quit too. He told me they hid people in the more stable areas to give the dogs hope that they could find a live person, to get them to keep searching.

:(

A wonderful page of quotes, pictures and many articles to read.

9/11 dog Heroes

"He was a great, big guy, and he was just bawling. He was crying like a baby. He couldn't talk, but he mouthed the words:
'Thank you. Thank you—and thank the dog.' "
— Louis Wardoup, volunteer, describing how his partner Insee unearthed the hand of a firefighter in front of his FDNY comrades.
