 The Man With No Face
The Man With No Face
For the past 35 years, 51 year-old Jose Mestre, from Lisbon, has been losing his face to a massive growth, distorting it out of all recognition – and it's still growing.

*may be too graphic for some.

I've seen several shows on tv about him. What a sad tale.

His sister is an amazing person to support him.

What a terrible thing to happen, especially to one's face. And when I think about people getting plastic surgery because they don't like their tiny wrinkles...we might not all look like supermodels, but perhaps we should all take a moment to be grateful to have a recognizable face.

wow, I understand about the lack of funds being a hindrance to getting surgery, but to not have anything done due to religious beliefs - I think that's really dedicated! I don't think I could do it.

Surrounded by a loving family, it seems incredible that he has not been treated and his face was allowed to grow so big. However, through years of medical misinformation, some misdiagnosis, lack of finances, and reluctance to undergo treatment due to religious beliefs, the growth has continued to obliterate his face.
Well, there's your problem, right there: "lack of finances, and reluctance to undergo treatment due to religious beliefs".

Sheesh.

I'm sure there are plastic surgeons out there who would love to make a name for themselves by taking the case. But, even if he has surgery the growth could start again. Also, being so vascular, he could easily bleed out during its' removal.

If being a martyr for his beliefs makes him feel better about himself, then who's to stop him? Let the poor man take his happiness where he can find it.

My thoughts exactly: if he dies because he never sought treatment in 4 decades because of religious beliefs, hell, let the man die! But I gathered from the end of the article that he just wanted to live a normal life, so it seems stupid for him to willingly keep living like this because he's *not* happy.
