 Parks are not for kids
Parks are not for kids
The town of Kensington, Md. just banned kids over the age of 5 from playing in public parks during the day.

Now they just sit empty. picked by jhordie 2 months ago

It's not that it's not for kids, it's that it's not for those kids.

I think it is odd that the official assumes the parents of the kids at the school don't pay taxes for the park, too.

I would think that such a law would be ruled unconstitutional under the equal protection statute.

I can't figure out how you can ban anyone from a public area.

I can understand not wanting the park to be used as a school's recess playground due to insurance reasons, for example someone breaks an arm falling off a swing when they should be on school property, but not for any of the reasons they claim.

If the one of the reasons the town manager doesn't want the school using it for recess is because of the litter, the school should have been cleaning it already. It's good for the kids to learn to be school proud and it would have something in their court when something like this happens.

I grew up in Kensington.

It's a suburb of DC, and it used to be a sleepy little town. Now it's Yuppie Hell - my old neighborhood is now exclusive and the homes are going for more than 10 times what they did when I lived there. While this may be a stupid way to express it, I think this law stems from alarm at the rapid yuppification - there were no exclusive private schools when I was there.

I agree though with the basic sentiment that a private school that's charging $10,000/yr for sixth graders can afford its own damn playground without expecting the rest of the tax base to foot the maintenance bill. I'm a Parks Commissioner in the town where I live now, and I know that the citizenry would expect some action to be taken if a private school were putting a disproportionate load on a public resource here as well.

At $10,000 a head, little Trey and Muffy are no doubt too precious to be picking up litter. That's why we hire brown people, don't you know.

Look, those 5 year olds are troublemakers. Their loud music, their heavy drinking, selling drugs, and rampant vandalism....the state had to put its foot down. I don't get how nobody else sees that.

Even if you send your child to private school, you get taxed and some of those taxes go to PUBLIC school so why would the private school be banned from a public park?! Also, what about home schooled children on different schedules? Why can't they use the park? Why can't I, as an adult, go to the park and enjoy my lunch or have a picnic with a friend? This is so incredibly stupid.

What about kids that don't go to the school - if they're over 5 years old they're not allowed in the park either? That's ridiculous.
