Symbol carved into green at Lakeville golf course
Symbol carved into green at Lakeville golf course
I thought this was ridiculous:

Police along with the Secret Service are investigating after a local country club discovered a symbol that represents eastern religious beliefs carved into the green.

Notice how it says... "represents eastern beliefs"? Obviously the most common association with the symbol is the Nazi's. Why on earth would they write that? picked by shuallyo 1 month ago

Because it's true, and because they probably don't want to say definitively what the motive of the culprit is before they know for sure. You're right, though. I would say there is a 99.9999% chance that it was intended as a Nazi symbol.

Yes, I know it's true but very few folks know the history of the symbol beyond being the nazi symbol. I just thought it was something odd that's all. And what does "I (swastika) Obama" mean anyway?

Swastics are also Hindu symbols, which might be what they meant?

If that was intended as a Nazi symbol, they got it backwards.

No real surprise there though. ;)

They wrote that only to poke fun at the ineptness of the person(s) who did this. It's kind of like they goofed up and wrote "I love Obama", instead of "I hate Obama".

That's the explanation I was looking for. Good point! Or if you look at the alternate meaning that same thing could also apply maybe.

From the article:

Police believe the vandals meant to carve a swastika next to President Barack Obama's name on the 18th hole; however, the symbol was backwards and means hope and peace in some Eastern countries.

They were just reporting what the symbol is, not what the idiot thought it represented.

Unless the guy meant "I hope and peace Obama", in which case, it begs the question as to why vandalize a golf course green to convey the message?

Very few "western folks," you mean. There are far many more "eastern folks" who know its provenance.

Actually it's also a Native American symbol. Most notably around here, Navajo. And, as I found out here, it was a common symbol throughout history of the world over.

Also, my former university (NMSU) adopted the swastika as it's symbol in the 1920's. The yearbook was called the swastika until the early 1980's
