"She (Ernestina Mondragon) was very mad; she was very upset," Mondragon said of her mother's reaction. "We ended up taking her to the [emergency room] because she was nervous; she was just stressing over the ticket."
I would be too if that were to happen to anyone of my family who spoke limited English.

In light of this, I am wondering where a rookie cop would learn such a thing after the '3 years of wrongful citations' surfaced... Because I seriously doubt that was a sincere mistake... He had to pick that up from someone who thought it would be funny to ticket immigrants who come to make a living and contribute to a new country for having limited or no knowledge of the language...

Bear in mind that it takes an older person a considerably longer time to learn a new language (even with classes) than it does a youngster...

the thing is, the people already in the country tend ot be ignorant of the new immigrant's problems.
they forget that 90 percent of them were immigrants too.

take north and south america for example. the only non immigrants you can argue are the native americans, who pretty much were wiped out, leaving only hundreds of thousands left out of a population of 30 million. (biggest genocide in history, even though history doesn't teach it that way)

so, in conclusion, dont go around being scornful of others for their beliefs.

“Naturally the common people don't want war; neither in Russia, nor in England, nor in America, nor in Germany. That is understood. But after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.”

Bulls**t... Maybe 3-5 Generations back they were immigrants but not as recent as 1 generation. This article touches on recent immigrants, 1st generation being cited for not speaking English when the majority of such are poor people looking to make a new life in a new country and try to learn the language as quickly and haphazardly as possible.

I think that they should be given 2 years MAX to get working knowledge of a new language if they really mean to stay in a new country to make a new life for themselves.

Moot point!

You call a language a belief? Because all this time I thought it was a means of communication. Part of a culture, like a belief... but I don't go around telling people that I believe I speak English, when people understand what is coming out of my mouth is ACTUALLY ENGLISH!

Nor do I say that I believe that I speak Spanish, Porque, francamente Yo hablo el espanol y si no lo hablara entonces no tendra las oportunidades que se me ofrecian cuando las nesecitaba...

Nor do I say that I believe I speak French, Parceque Je pense que Je parle le Francais, pas bien, mais se Je parle meilleur que toi...

And really, you want to argue legal immigration with a 1st Generation Venezuelan (naturalized) immigrant who learned English in 6 months? Who actually lives in Dallas?

I would never move to France.

It's not that I don't appreciate the architecture, or the culture, or even the art. I would never move to France because I can't speak French.

I wouldn't move to Germany without knowing German. I could never go to Italy without knowing Italian. Walking around functionally illiterate would drive me insane.

How does someone choose to go to France when the only thing they speak is English? I don't understand it. I never will. Someone who chooses to move to France learns French before they go. They don't immigrate to France without speaking French and then expect others to just 'put up with them' do they?

How do you buy groceries? Trust?
How do you navigate the streets? How do you ask for help? How do you buy an apartment, get utilities, fill out the immigration form?

I simply don't understand it. What the cops did was wrong but that is the SECOND wrong. The first was expecting the people around you to conform to your language without conforming to theirs.

I don't support what these officers did. I just don't understand how you can move into a country where you are illiterate.

You, conveniently forgot the words "Legal" and "Illegal".

Trust me, people are not ignorant of how they came to be. Heritage is something most all peoples hold close to the heart.
