It's OK because 8 times out of 10, when I want a cab, I can rest assured the driver will be the same gender as me.

I do too. I don't mind companies discriminating, actually. If they have a business plan that they think will work, then they should be allowed to do so. I'd hope the market would take care of them, however.

But I actually do think this is a good idea.

this is far from a new concept. mexico has women only buses, japan, india, and brazil have women only train cars. these systems were put in place because apparently there are a good many dudes out there who can't stand next to a lady on a public transport without groping her. according to the article, you can't even hire a cab and not get hit on or leered at by the driver. yet women have places to go and do not want to be groped - what to do when the menfolk can't be relied on to behave themselves in public?
i don't think this is discriminatory anymore than a women only abuse shelter is.
