Sacred Mayan city found submerged in a Guatemalan lake
Sacred Mayan city found submerged in a Guatemalan lake
The Mayans didn't predict the end of the world in 2012, and they clearly didn't predict whatever catastrophe submerged their sacred city thousands of years ago. Now divers are exploring Samabaj, an ancient paradise now sunk below the surface of a secret Guatemalan lake. picked by equinox 4 weeks ago

The floodwaters may have preserved the site well enough that we can greatly enhance our understanding of Mayan culture. Cool story.

What exactly makes the city "sacred?"

How do we know it wasn't just ancient waterfront property??

The types of artifacts they are finding are not domestic but ritualistic, and the steles (the huge carved panels) relate a Mayan history which probably wouldn't be there unless this was a large palace or temple complex.
