Just as a quick addendum; I have no idea what those Cyrillic letters mean. XD

There will be a gold rush of people seeking to register all the great names. I need to poll my multilingual friends to see what domain names might be the best to invest in.

The guy who registers jihad.com in Arabic will have a winner.

I think it's great... if China ever opens up the internet to just anyone, that might be a big market - or maybe India. Think globally people - hmmm now for a product or service to go with that neat new website. ;)

Absolutely stupid idea. Another example of political correctness gone wild. I am sorry that not everyone uses a latin-based alphabet but that is something that is too bad. The internet needs a universal language just like so many industries. You can't have 4000 different alphabets for various sites it causes way way more problems than the benefit of being "fair" whatever the heck that means.

One of the problems would be the rise of phishing. There are many non-latin characters that look exactly like latin-based ones.

www.ігѕ.com
www.irs.com

look the same but they are not

www.рayрal.com is not www.paypal.com

more examples here and elsewhere.

Yes, there could be workarounds to help reduce the dangers of phishing but why bother?

водка.РФ

It isn't just the first part of the url which would allow for non-latin based characters, that is already supported by punycode. It is the domain names, the .com .org .net and the like which would allow for non-latin based characters
