There's something similar called "letterboxing," which doesn't use GPS. In that, you get a starting point, maybe an address or something, and then you follow instructions like your classic pirate treasure map. When you find the treasure, there's a log book, and everybody makes up their own custom stamp to stamp the book with.

I'm not really an expert on letterboxing - just know a bit about it. You can find more at: , including searching for boxes. Here are the directions to one near my house, chosen because they're short:

LOCATION: Between 600 & 700 W. 4800 S. parking lot and small park is on the south side.

CLUES: From the parking lot, go southward toward the river and cross the bridge. At the beginning of the “boardwalk” turn around and take 5 steps back, to a tree on the right with cement pieces scattered near it. A smaller piece of loose cement, in front is guarding [the box].
