The first line of the article is misleading. I was hoping for a rock concert.

Talk about truth being stranger than fiction. When the tea-party movement first started, I'm sure they thought their TLA was both clever, but also linked them to a famous event in the Revolutionary War.

How could they possibly have imagined that journalists and pundits would find it convenient to borrow a noun that similar enough to their name as to sound relevant, but also refer to a sex act which is obscure enough that they can use the term freely without fear of censorship or controversy.

Tea-Bagging was an established deviant sex practice LONG before the current anti-tax anti-government movement.

I should have said "borrow" not "coin."

Now it's fixed.

It was my impression that the tea-baggers named themselves as such. But even if they didn't, I don't think it's particularly fair to blame the media for their own poorly-chosen name. It isn't similar enough to the historical event to draw a name from that...

what else should they be called? People who attend the tea party events?

The sexual connection is still there.

Also, that sounds more trivial. To me, at least.

But points for throwing out an option.

Protesters would suffice I'd imagine

Alright, but if you are referring to a specific group of protestors (as there have been many protests of varying kinds this year)...then what?

Protestors is a perfectly valid term...and it is used for these people. But I don't think we can be surprised we have a particular label for them.

They are Republicans. At least they are in my area.

What the hell do Republicans know about sex?

Except it should be Missionary style. :)

J/K, J/K. I know there are lots of horny Republicans. Unfortunately they're all in congress. :(

Tea Partiers would be the obvious mistake - the inclusion of the bag is either a mistake or intended to insult*

Teamocrats would probably be to clever for them (or at least the ones I've seen in the videos).

True story - Mary Whitehouse, professional busy-body and interferer founded a society called Clean Up Television. In its first incarnation it was called Clean Up National Television. It wasn't until they got to the business of making placards that anyone noticed this perhaps was a mistake given that one of their chief targets was the use of profane language in broadcast media...

In other walks of life this holds true too.

I accept your suggestion as a viable option.

But I still have this nagging feeling that Tea Baggers was self-selected.
