Hollywood & Vine
This photo was taken in 1906. It would later become the intersection of Hollywood and Vine.

In 1913, when scouting for a location for the western The Squaw Man, Cecil B DeMille sent the following telegram:

FLAGSTAFF NO GOOD FOR OUR PURPOSE. HAVE PROCEEDED TO CALIFORNIA. WANT AUTHORITY TO RENT BARN IN PLACE CALLED HOLLYWOOD FOR $75 A MONTH.

He received the reply:

AUTHORIZE YOU TO RENT BARN BUT ON MONTH-TO-MONTH BASIS. DON’T MAKE ANY LONG COMMITMENT. picked by pocksucket 2 weeks ago
