I think the numbers are a bit off ... I mean did you know or even care about WWII in the 3rd-6th grade? You really don't get into those sort of things till you're older, not until at least junior high, so after 12 years old. Then you really can learn about and more importantly understand the horrors.

I think adults, especially theses adults that work with vets all day, maybe are expecting too much. You may know the answers yourself now, but what about your 9 year old self?

I would suggest you go and ask my 9 year-old self, but I guess he's outside in the woods, building dams at the creek or something like that.

I suggest you go ask my 6th grade self. We had already read Diary of Anne Frank and at 10 I damn well knew who Hitler was, and the names of the major camps. 3rd grade, no. But by 5th or 6th, of course!

Let's not under estimate how smart children can be. The more you dumb it down, well... they dumber they will be. Push them, and they are more than capable of learning this stuff.

Just to make it clear, I do not under estimate the intelligence of children. I was not suggesting any such thing.
Not being taught something until they are older is not 'dumbing down' anything.

When I was 5 or 6, Hitler, Mussolini and pulled their weenie was your basic WWII joke.

Children are sponges... the earlier you teach them, the better

Is this something they were taught in school? I guess that would be my question...If it's not something that's been covered in class, why would the kids know?

I don't agree. There are things children can't comprehend and there are some things that children should not be taught until they are old enough to really get it.

What could possibly be the advantage in teaching a small child about the horrors of the world? Except to scare them. Do you really think they would understand anything about the death camps, or other persecutions?

Both my Grandfathers fought in WWII and my father was stationed in Germany in the late 80's when I was quite young. I remember learning about Hitler, concentration camps, and other horrors of the war. It never scared me, in fact, I think it benefited me. I think that children are a lot tougher than we give them credit for.

Okay so the charity (which helps military veterans) paid for and ran a survey which surprise surprise discovered that there was a lack of education regarding military history. This means that they will help educate the children - provided as always that grants, donations, and government money comes rolling in.

Boy, they sure were lucky that the survey got that response wasn't it. I mean if the survey had not found that 17% of the children thought Auschwitz was some sort of European DisneyLand the charity would have been out the money for the survey and without the new sources for income.

and even better, a large majority of the children are begging for the charity to teach them.

This is such an obvious case of a company cooking their test results so they can gain financial windfalls. It is obscene and sad that it is being taken at face value.

This is what happens when the whole subject of Nazism is made taboo.

What did they think would happen?
