The Things People Use as Bookmarks
The Things People Use as Bookmarks
Any librarian who has pulled a tour of duty on the circulation desk of a public library has a few tales to tell about the curious objects people use, and then forget to remove, as bookmarks.
I hear those library tours of duty can be rough. picked by gnikgnok 2 years ago

Something I have never understood, and please don't get offended, why is it that a librarian needs years of college?

What the heck is librarian "science"? Why would someone want to pay for college spend all that time and effort to be not much more than a bookstore manager? I can't imagine your average librarian gets paid very much. People complain that teachers don't get paid enough, but librarians get paid far less (I assume) and work far far far more hours.

I love the librarian needs a college degree, but the volunteers that help out since most libraries can't afford all the employees that are needed don't need any special education to fulfil the duties.

Like I said, I am not putting down librarians. I am merely trying to grasp what part of their job requires such extensive education. I mean once you've learned the Dewey Decimal system and you've learned how to deal with children what's left. It seems to me that the exact same skills that are needed to work in a bookstore is what a librarian requires.

Sure they need to know how to get assorted info. They need to know how to access assorted databases, but again nothing you need college for.

There's Dewey fractions, Dewey whole numbers, etc...

The list goes on and on.

sigh... I'm such a tard. I just now realized I had the wrong link attached to the headline. Now it's all making sense - the comments, the confusion... sorry all!

try the link now, Rowan... and I think you'll find the article still doesn't really have a point, but at least it makes sense.

2many- from my understanding being a librarian constitutes a lot, but I know from talking to medical librarians. It involves checking the data of books taken out looking for trends and seeing what books we need more copies off, or periodicals are requested (so, being a buyer of books and having statistical analysis training) as well as an understanding of the population you're serving, theft rates, etc. Plus there's is knowledge of computer systems (CLIO, Lexis-Nexus, PubMed, we have some tri-instutional computer thing going on) and the flow of materials.

I just think they get less respect than teachers.
