Female Badminton Players Ordered To Wear Skirts Posted: 5 months ago by suebe
The Badminton World Federation has been searching for a way to drum up interest in female players before the 2012 Olympics. Its solution: Force women to play in skirts to create a more "attractive presentation." Amazingly, officials insist this isn't sexist.

Pro golfers are required to wear collared shirts and slacks. No jeans or shorts. Or they can wear the original golf outfit like Payne Stewart used to. I'm pretty sure women tennis players are required to wear skirts. Women beach volleyballers wear bathing suits. Basketball players have to wear the team uniform as well as baseball and football players (the real football AND soccer). They get paid to play a sport if they don't like the uniform requirements, then quit and get a real job. I would call it sexist if they made the girls play shirtless or in a Hooters uniform, not in a skirt.

Of course it isn't "sexist". It is what it is. It is business. You want to play badminton for fun, dress however you wish.

You want there to be money to pay for the sport, then you have to attract an audience.

You have 2 choices.

1. please the public and give in to their requests - including dress codes.

2. Force the public to pay the money that supports the sport.

Really quite sensible.

Women wear more revealing outfits than men in a number of Olympic sports like gymnastics, track and field, volleyball and beach volleyball.

Yet the badminton rule seems to have been devised strictly for reasons of appearance.
Yes, and so what? It is what it is. As mentioned it is certainly better to sell the sport by giving the public what it wants than by putting out a tax to support the sport.

Sure they claim they aren't using sex to sell the sport but that is silly. They are because they must. Sex helps sell many sports male and female. This is especially true in the olympics where sex is used to sell the sport, the games themselves, and the individual athletes.

Of course the skirt isn't just for "sex". It is also to increase the feminine aspect of the sport. America would rather have most of their female athletes to be feminine and a dress helps. It is similar to many businesses which dictates that the women dress in skirts or dresses.
