How much money does the substitute teacher owe for showing the movie to a class of 12-year-olds. What was the teacher thinking, if she was at all?

Unless you watched it with a bunch of 12 year old kids in school, I'd say you're SOL...

"Richardson said his granddaughter was traumatized by the movie and had to undergo psychological treatment and counseling."

What a joke! The teacher obviously had no right to show an R rated movie that's not approved by the school board, but a $500,000 law suit! WTF!
If their concerns are real, rather than a big money grab, it's going to get a lot worse for this young lady if her parents continue to shove her in the closet like that!

I thought it would be common sense not to show that movie to a bunch of 12 year olds. That's why there's an R rating.

Regardless, the father sounds a little over-protective. Like "curse words" in some of the literature... that's almost unavoidable with all the books schools normally assign that use one or two "damn"s in 150 pages.

I agree that the teacher had no right to show an R-rated movie to a class of 12 year old kids. However, the parents of that girl have no right to sue for that amount of money. If the girl did indeed need psychological counseling after watching that movie, then there is something wrong with her that could not have been caused simply by watching a movie about gay cowboys.

Criminy. When I was 12, I was already reading Stephen King books and watching "Nightmare on Elm Street", and I turned out just fine.

I've been told I'm mentally 12 years old. Would that work?

I was kinda on the fence with that but I think you are right... "religion" it is.

Um...with all do respect, why? One quote from the old man said it was against their faith, but the school is not said to be parochial and the movie certainly isn't, nor is the court system.

Maybe I'm being nit-picky, but I don't see this as being primarily religion based in content, save for the last comment from grandad.

When I was 12 I was smoking pot daily. This girl needs to grow up a bit.

Edit: I don't mean that she should become a pothead, but I think she should be grown up enough to not sue for watching a movie.

I'm not against anything in the movie, but you can bet your ass I'd sue. This would be a slam dunk case for William Shattner PLAYING a lawyer, drunk, and hopped up on benadryl. This sub is/was a totaly idiot. Even the possibility of showing it as part of an adgenda is un entertainably idiotic. I remember having some ODD subs when I was in middle and highschool, most of them were ex-teachers that could hack the everyday duldrums of creating a lesson plan EVERYDAY and trying to connect to the same group of uninterested kids EVERYDAY. But they did think (in some probably altered state of mind) that they could come up with ONE good lesson (a month, a year) and really 'open' the minds of some kids bored with dull burnt out teacher EVERYDAY. They came into our honors clases like a cross between a court jester, and Robin Williams in Dead Poets Society, and left chewed up and ready to hit the bar by their adolescent but intellectual superiors.

A 12 year old who needs to see a counsellor after seeing a romantic drama movie probably needed the counsellor even before.

When I was 12 I was trying hard to get laid. It took me a year to finally succeed.

case #124,515,587,872 why our legal/liability system is so screwed.

Absolutly zero damage of any sort was done.
Okay, it was dumb to unwise to show it.
Forget that it is 'R', the vast majority of kids wouldn't like it and will obviously cause controversy. Still, no one was truly hurt. It is just a get-rich-quick scam that shouldn't be allowed but unfortunately is all to prevalent.

Also, the school shouldn't pay as they didn't authorize or condone it.

I remember when I was in high school and on more than one occasion one of my very cool teachers showed us "Warriors". That was R-rated, but no one complained because everyone enjoyed the movie, although a case of damage could have been made then too.
