 Space diving (in 1960)
Space diving (in 1960) [video]
On August 16, 1960, Joe Kittinger lifted off from earth in a helium balloon and rose to a height of 102,800 feet. Once he reached the edge of space, he did something incredibly brave and amazing...he jumped.

Amazing video...a must watch. BrownTrout should dig this. picked by kxmk 2 years ago

There is SO much to say about this! He jumps from 102,000 feet...the edge of the atmosphere for crying out loud! I had a hard time even watching the footage from his personal video camera...seeing the black of space and the sun and stars realizing he is not in any vehicle of any kind. Holy cow.

Then he freefalls roughly 80,000 feet. What a rush that must have been!! 618 mph...amazing.

I do have a question though, if he DID break the sound barrier, would he have heard the sonic boom? Or would he have heard his own screaming while he was moving faster than sound? Or just before he broke the barrier, if he had thrown a ball down...would THAT have also exceeded the speed of sound? Heheheh.

Guy's got solid steel balls, I'll give him that.

Popular Science has its July issue out with an article on Kittinger's amazing jump and what is being planned for the very near future... a 60 mile (316,000+ ft) free fall from near Earth orbit.

Just to put things into perspective - meteorites begin burning up in the atmosphere at lower altitudes than this!!

It's being discussed as both an extreme sport and as a potential egress method for astronauts. I've jumped from 10,000 feet and that was a real leap of faith for me. I can't even imagine stepping out at 60 miles!

The song is a combination on UNKLE's "In A State" and Moby's "God Moving Over The Face Of The Waters". The narration at the beginning is by John Malkovich from the movie "Alive".

It's amazing how much some good narrative work and music help out a video. That's insane, floating that far up and then jumping, the man must have been suicidal.

No, per relativity, that's only perceptable (in existance?) to people observing this... like the Doppler effect is.
