Pope: Other Christians Not True Churches
Pope: Other Christians Not True Churches
Pope Benedict XVI reasserted the primacy of the Roman Catholic Church, approving a document released Tuesday that says other Christian communities are either defective or not true churches and Catholicism provides the only true path to salvation. picked by AutumnLotus 2 years ago

"This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world."

I wouldn't go so far as to call the pope the antichrist.

I have, however, heard a preacher from nearly every Christian denomination make the same claim - we are the church that 'god' loves the most, through this church alone may you find salvation... blah blah bs.

Religion was made by man in his weakness - anyone with half a brain could realize all these claims are made by people who want to attract a larger congregation.

And for the record, the Catholic Church has been saying this since Martin Luther nailed the 95 Theses to the Door of the Schlosskirche.

How does he justify praying to the saints or Mary? That made God's top ten list.

You should stop by my church...my pastor wouldn't say something ignorant like that...and honestly, if any preacher does say something like that...that's not the type of church you want to go to.

Religion was made by man in his weakness...
Yeah, you're right, weakness, frailty and the general feeling that there is more to life then born - live - die. At least imo...there's got to be something bigger and more badass than me or anyone else out there...

I can help you there. Can't have that pesky #2 commandment when we are praying to statues of Mary, now, can we?

So, they split #9 and #10 in two.

I am glad I left the Catholic church, you don't EVEN wanna get me going on the pope.

I'm not saying every church and every pastor is like this, I'm simply stating that the pope is not the first person to say this, and that this attitude is not restricted to the Catholic Church.

There are many wonderful pastors, priests and nuns out there - but there also are a few bad eggs.

I'm not saying that I don't believe something bigger.
Believing in something bigger is not religion.

Just because one is not religious does not mean one is not spiritual.

Very disappointing. I want to say something witty or funny, but nothing applies. This act will do nothing but cause more friction in an already stressed relationship. It was my understanding that both 'sides' had agreed to disagree, but this just draws a very broad line straight down the middle, which will cause hatred rather than simple indifference.

I'm a protestant, but even I mourned a bit for the last Pope when he passed. With continued policies such as this, I'm wont miss this guy whatsoever.

I agree...I don't consider myself religious at all. When I think of 'religious' i think of the traditional Catholic churches who practice the mundane, nonsensical (imo) rituals - "Our Father who art in Heaven..." and "Hail Mary..." Or the Rosary or praying to Saints, etc. Spirituality is completely different.

Ignorant? Did you just say that a pastor who says his church is the only real one is ignorant?? Putting aside the fact that all religious people are ignorant, how can a pastor not say that? The core foundation of all monotheistic religions is that there is one god and only one god, theirs. Any church that claims to be "understanding" and "tolerant" is just blowing smoke, at the end of the day any one religion is completely incompatible with any other, whether they preach it or not. Your pastor might not say other religions are wrong, but I guarantee he still thinks they're going to hell, otherwise why would he be a pastor of your particular religion.

What you consider to be religious is irrelevant, religious is a word with a meaning and if you go to church and believe in god you are two things, one of which is religious, the other I will either leave up to your imagination or let you know later once (if) you've responded.

At least the pope has the decency to admit he doesn't like other religions.

The Bible is clear that other gods exists. Technically, the word 'god' means 'idol' so, a god is pretty much what one worships. Also, the 1st commandment (Exodus 20:3) believed to be given to Moses from God says, "You shall have no other gods before me." This being said, even God acknowledges the existence of other gods (aka idols) - spiritual, physical or otherwise.

...at the end of the day any one religion is completely incompatible with any other...
True, although historically and ideologically, many religions have much in common. However, my comment was about churches not religions.

Your pastor might not say other religions are wrong, but I guarantee he still thinks they're going to hell, otherwise why would he be a pastor of your particular religion.
I really don't walk around thinking about who is and who isn't going to hell. That's not how I've been taught, and I don't believe my pastor thinks that way either. Other Christians may, but not me. I have other stuff to think about, like weekends and video games.

What you consider to be religious is irrelevant, religious is a word with a meaning and if you go to church and believe in god you are two things, one of which is religious, the other I will either leave up to your imagination or let you know later once (if) you've responded.
Saying an opinion is irrelevant isn't really a good way to encourage discussion. 'Religious', to me means, 'xyz' (as I stated before) and to others it may mean 'abc' (going to church, believing in god(s), etc.)

I don't consider myself religious, others may. And I''m curious as to what the 'other' mysterious thing is, however I imagine it could just be some kind of slander/put down/discouragement. But that's your opinion.

At least the pope has the decency to admit he doesn't like other religions.
Again, the pope is speaking to "other Christian communities (that) are either defective or not true churches". He's not speaking to other religions - as you've stated before, various religions are (innately) incompatible.

Anyway, I do suggest you listen to the pod cast so you can get an idea of where my pastor is coming from...
