i grew up with "soda." people in the northwest call it "pop." also, a lot of them say "heighth" instead of "height." and "acrosst" instead of "across." and "crick" instead of "creek."

could just be idaho.

whatever the case, i do not trust their pronunciation or their strange ways of saying things.

here's the big one! is it CAR-mel or CA-RA-MEL?

My grandmah from Central PA says crick.. I think thats cool

Its CAR-mel if its like the sauce or the stuff you put on icecream.

but if its those little candies then they are CA-RA-MELs to me

I grew up in the "pop" belt (Michigan).. Now I live in the "soda" belt (North Carolina). Some of these bumpkins don't know what I'm talking about when I refer to pop

But all (in) all. I (just like) to use (parentheses).

I am originally from St. Louis, MO and I grew up with my grandma calling it sody, and my great grandma(R.I.P.) saying pop. My mom always called it soda so naturally, that's what I call it.

You're kidding me. I'm Canadian and in Canada and always have been and I'm used to soda. Actually, my parents and grandma call it soda-pop. I say soda. Pop bugs me. And it's care-ah-mel. That's why there's an "a" in that spot. If you're talking about onions, like caramelized onions, then it's normal to call it carmel or say carmelized, but spell check says it's caramelized therefore carmelized is STILL incorrect. But not weird. Calling the candies car-mels, then that is seriously messed up.

This used to confuse me when I was younger.

In the UK, soda means soda water - i.e. carbonated water. So it's pop. Or fizzy pop. Which is a fairly pointless distinction as all pop is fizzy.

Oh, and caramel. Always caramel. Carmel is a mountain, and something to do with Catholics.

I say soda, and I have no idea why, because apparently everyone in Washington says pop.

Youngstown Ohio, it's pop. In investigating why the rest of the world calls it 'soda', I was told that the term 'pop' came from Cleveland. Obviously they researched their asses for this information.

I always type out 'soda' because I thought it was just a northern Ohio thing, but I'm glad to find out that it's not.

So what are the white areas? Do the people there think that all references to soda are swearing, so they don't say anything at all?

(BTW I'm from Colorado, which according to this map is mostly "pop". However, I've met only one person in my entire life that doesn't use "soda")
