It's the backlash of lawsuit happy consumers, isn't it? If it's labelled, then the company can't be sued for it as effectively. Of course, then someone illiterate will claim discrimination, and we get everything plastered with little icons of horror.

This one is sorta valid. It appeared on a packet of peanuts. Peanuts aren't nuts.

A nut allergy is different to a peanut allergy, and someone who can eat peanuts safely may not be able to eat nuts.
