I have an English accent, but it is just one of many to choose from.

What concerns me most about this is whether the poor chap's comprehension of English improved too.

Otherwise that would be incredibly frustrating - if you could speak a language fluently, but not understand a word of what you were saying in it.

This is bullsh1t, linguistically speaking. Complete bullsh1t. Had he been living in England before, being exposed to the language and the dialect ["accent"] mentioned - maybe. But just like that: BS. Sorry.
