A Sad End For A New York Carriage Horse
A Sad End For A New York Carriage Horse
"We are devastated by the tragic and sudden loss of our mare Smoothie," said Carolyn Daly, a spokeswoman for the Horse & Carriage Association of New York. "This afternoon's freak accident was overwhelming to all of us in the industry who so dearly love our horses." picked by dollyllama 1 year ago

That is very sad. Those poor horses. All of them.

So let me get this straight. The horse died after it "broke loose and ran into a tree"? It sounds like the poor horse committed suicide.

These poor horses shouldn't be out on the street. Let them (if treated right and not worked in hot weather) stay in Central Park. This is a sad incident.

When horses panic, they run away from the source of their fear in what amounts to a blind run. If she was aiming for something in particular (a building to hide behind or something) she probably never even saw the tree because she was so focused on her goal. Horses (and cows) are often injured when they run through barbed wire fences because they just don't see them.

For the record, I'm against ANY horses being made to pull carriages in the city. I see this all the time in Atlanta, Charlotte, New Orleans, etc. I think it's shameful and should be done away with.

Also, many carriage horses wear blinders.
