I have heard that if you light a candle it makes the tearing stop, maybe she had some lit when he threw it. Hehe.

If you put a slice of the onion on your forhead as you cut it, it has the same effect. Perhaps she was slicing one and he noticed she forgot and he was trying to help her by throwing one to stick to her head so she wouldn't cry...?
