Blind people: Hybrid cars pose hazard
Gas-electric hybrid vehicles, the status symbol for the environmentally conscientious, are coming under attack from a constituency that doesn't drive: the blind. picked by punthe 2 years ago

Along the same lines, I remember reading about a new type of electric motorcycle for which they actually had to add the sound of an engine, so that people would hear it coming.

Its kinda creepy. One turned on and drove away from directly behind me once and I didn't even hear it.

My Aunt in Michigan has a hybrid and it is very strange to be in it when it "starts up" and you start moving. When you are used to a standard engined vehicle it is kinda weird. I guess you would get used to it after awhile.

In most cases, when the car is in "stealth mode", it is going quite slow, i.e., under 25 mph. They aren't completely silent, but the noise or impulse feeling you might sense IS unusual!

I would hope that a blind person walking where there are cars would also have a seeing eye dog or at least a white cane. Most drivers who see a person with a white cane would, imho, be a bit careful and watchful when/if they see it!

And if your seeing eye dog walks you out into traffic, you have bigger problems than quiet hybid cars.

No big deal.

Just think of how scent is added to propane and propane accessories (sorry couldn't resist the KotH ref) - it'd be the same thing for cars. It makes sense, but it's TOTALLY anti-Darwinism... (again, sorry, I totally had to say it)

If you're looking for a hybrid that makes noise, try the Aptera:

Just put bells on them, so they can be heard when they move.

The cars, not the blind people.
