D'uh, he reported it? I understand the "good citizen" there was a murder in the house thing, maybe the widow needs it, but honestly, $100K cash, no way would I report that. Finders keepers I say.

Everybody says that if they found cash they wouldn't report it. I am one of those people. I would not report it. But we always hear about people who do. Which leads me to believe that a crapload of people out there must be finding large quantities of cash.
I'm just waiting for my turn.

I found a $50 bill about three weeks ago at the Baltimore Penn Station. There was an initial instinct to say something to someone but that quickly went away when I remembered how broke I am. The best part is when I got in the cab and looked at the bill, there was two of them. Things like that never happen to me.

He should have known that by repoting this money, he'd have to wait until a full(and probably long) police investigation was done, especially considering there was past criminal activity in the house. He'd be lucky if he ever sees that money...

I'd return it. It isn't mine. I've always been very anal about returning money, wallets, ect. that I find. I've always gone by the assumption the good deeds done will be returned.

A few years after high school, I was walking through a parking lot toward a store, when a woman ahead of me dropped some money. I quickly walked up, picked it up while noticing it was a hundred dollar bill, and returned it to her. I was piss poor then, and probably couldn't pay the electric bill that month, but I felt that she probably needed it worse than I did. Besides, she earned it, not me.

That being said, I'd question why a bail bondsman had $100,000 in cash hidden up in his attic.

I would have found a different hiding place, and kept my mouth shut. It would be a very nice retirement stash.

You bought the house AS IS.....That means Everything that came with it belongs to you now.

That's my stance and I'm sticking to it....

For me, this is a different situation. You KNEW who the money belonged to, you saw the woman drop it. Karma says you did the right thing and anyone that wouldn't is an asshat. Finding money in a house that you now OWN and have no way of knowing 100% who the money belonged to....hey.....tough luck for them, GREAT luck for you.

I'm just sayin'......

First off - FLORIDA!!!

If I knew someone had been murdered there, most likely by someone looking for the cash stashes, I'd be worried they might try again to find it. So the murderer is dead, he probably talked to others about it. Some other parolee might come looking...

I don't know; it should go back to the widow.

It does occassionally go the other way.

That would be my attitude, but to a point. I'd do a bit of research about the previous homeowners; if I found out it had belonged to some dear sweet old lady or something, I'd report/return it. If I found out it was sketchy people.... I'd find a new hiding spot and keep mum.

Altonsaid stuff....

If I found someones wallet I would of course make sure it got back to the owner. I have seen people drop money and other things and make sure to return it.

I have lost my wallet a few times before and I sometimes got it back with all my money and other ti,es they found it completely empty.

If I found a large stash of money with no markings of who it may belong to, the loser is out of luck. I would probably anonymously call the police to see if that amount had been reported stolen/lost. If it had been reported I would return it. If it hadn't been reported I would not turn it in for the fact it would probably be held up in the legal system for years.

After I bought my house I explored the attic and found a heap of cr@p ranging from stuffed animals to xmas decorations to old camping gear. I don't want it (it's still up there, bothering my clean OCD nature) but since the previous homeowner left it, it's now mine *sigh*.
So if I have to keep this trash - then he gets to keep the money. You buy the house and anything the previous owner leaves. I just wish they had left money, not trash :)

A little while back I found £60 in the street. I kept it. I did look around to see if there was anyone likely if might belong too. I contemplated taking it to the police very briefly, but I thought that if I had lost the money, I'd not bother going to the police to see if it had been handed in. I'd assume that whoever found it kept it. So that was almost the same as the person who lost it saying I could keep it.

Plus I thought the police would probably laugh at me.

So I saved the tax-payers (including m) a bit of money.

If it was £50,000 I'm not sure what I would do* but I think I would probably keep it.

FTA...

"We didn't know if the murderer knew about the money,"
did make me think that the guy might have been worried that the killer was after the money and he would come back, but he's dead, so I wonder if there's something else we don't know that made him scared.

*In the interests of science, if anyone wants to hide £50,000 in my attic to see what I'd do, then please feel free.
