That is one of those oh-so-popular urban myths. Scientists never made that claim.

I'm not saying you're wrong 2man, but here is a scientist that says the earth is flat.

I'm sure there are 'trained' people that also say they're invisible and travel through time on off days... What is important are the concepts held to be working models (and that's all even scientists really ever even admit they are coming up with, as that's all we humans CAN come up within labs/our minds) by the majority of the community after a new idea has been studied enough by many to agree that it seems to hold more water than the last. It all takes time and experimentation... Saying that there are a few imbeciles out there spouting the dumb, doesn't in any way discredit the entire scientific community, so your initial point now even seems more hollow than it did... well..., initially.
