Mistique Sky - Aurora Borealis
Mistique Sky - Aurora Borealis
Auroras (or aurorae) [sing: aurora] are natural colored light displays,
which are usually observed in the night sky, particularly in the polar zone.
Some scientists therefore call them "polar auroras" (or "aurorae polaris"). picked by zlovelj 10 months ago

I had one and only one chance at seeing it up in Alaska. The cutter I was on was heading south out of Kodiak. It was truly beautiful. I took my camera but none of the pictures turned out. People told me they wouldn't but I said if even one does it was worth it.

Hehe - I always get a kick out of this:

Checking the lights is often something I do before I go to bed many evenings. I like them more than fireworks. Sometimes they make noise. Often you can pick up their frequencies on a radio. It is really too bad that most humans live too close to the equator to see them!

I like the NOAA auroral activity website; it's kind of handy: http://sec.noaa.gov/pmap/index.html

Out of curiosity, where are you from, aurora nut? A decent northerly latitude, or do you have to journey to get some good light shows?

i'm in the twin cities - minnesota. i've seen it down here a few times now, but at least once i drove north on a 'good' night to try and see them again. the numbers on the noaa site were high enough for us but i couldn't get out from under the clouds that time.

I lived in Alaska for 2 1/2 years. I would move back there in a heartbeat if I could. The lights were absolutely fantastic.
