Too bad there isn't more info. The man must have some serious health issues. Obviously, you don't just forget you drove and walk home. He must have some major dementia problems (or the story isn't 100% accurate)

Maybe he remembered to put the gas cap on but forgot his car. Just a case of absentmindedness.

I once walked to an ATM to notice that the previous user had left their card in after checking the balance (PIN already entered, ready for withdrawal). They had some 4000 EUR or so in the account.

No, I didn't take any.

stuff like that happens all the time.

Forgetting your car and walking off is not just being forgetful, that is dementia at the very least

I've a friend who did exactly that.

The cause, pure and simple, was that he was stoned. Most certainly too stoned to drive, so it was probably a good thing.

The garage staff simply pushed the car to the side of the forecourt and then laughed a lot at him when remembered and went back for it the next day.

Not saying that there weren't issues of dementia here, just giving an exemplum.

Yes, actually the first thing that popped into my head when I read this, was the Cheech & Chong movie where the cop ask Cheech for his license and Cheech tells the cop that it was on "the back of the car"

I also seem to remember a scene (not sure if Cheech/Chong) where they thought they were driving but they were actually parked

There could be explanations other than dementia.

Maybe he walks to the station regularly to get something from the mini-mart, only this time he brought his car because it needed gas. He walks in, pays for the gas, talks with the clerk for a while, and walks out of the store with his Slurpee, strolling home like he always has.

Severe absentmindedness, but necessarily a sign of major dementia. It's impossible to make a judgment without more details.

Good point. I wasn't picturing a small gas station within walking distance. That is actually a very strong possibility

I printed this story for my boss. She's CONSTANTLY forgetting things. I wrote a note on it that said "if you ever get this bad I'm putting you in a home"

She left laughing...forgot her cell phone.

Think about it. Was the gas station close to his home? Is it a place he often walks to in lieu of driving when he needs to get something? Because if so, I can honestly see myself doing something exactly like that.

I woke up and went out to my car this morning to discover that I'd left it unlocked and running from the night before.

Fortunately it's a hybrid, so it didn't leave any lasting damage...that I could tell, anyway.
