Okay, first question:

Did she know about the uniform requirement before taking the job?

Assuming she was not made aware of it, which is very possible what is the big deal in allowing longer skirts for women who don't want to wear ones that end at the knee for whatever reason? Why not also let them wear slacks if they wish?

It doesn't interfere with her job performance. She is a security screener not a cocktail waitress. Generally speaking, no one is paying attention to her skirt.

I can think of no reason why they shouldn't set a minimum length but allow the women to wear as long a skirt as they want provided it isn't a safety hazard.

There is no reason not to make allowances for those whose religious beliefs, personal values, physical scars, or any other reason make them uncomfortable wearing a medium-length skirt.

i think it's ridiculous that a skirt is even required for female employees. how is that even fair? like toomany said - why can't she wear slacks? do the men wear kilts?

This isn't the 20's. Let the woman wear slacks.

Well, women shouldn't have to wear skirts as a uniform if they don't want to - independent from the religious context. Obviously there should be an alternative uniform, the proposed slacks.

Of course many muslim women (or men) reject trousers, too. How far will you go to accomodate religious beliefs concerning propper attire? A uniform is just that - uniform.

I think if anyone chooses a religion that limits their freedom, it's primarily their own problem.

It would be nice to know her side of the story, then questions like 2many's could be answered. personally, I don't wear dresses or skirts unless I need to. I think they should re-think the whole skirt thing...at least to either or. As for religious preference, well....that is her choice. It's a choice...she certainly can choose NOT to abide by it--which clearly she won't--as long as it doesn't affect (or didn't) affect her job who cares? I certainly wouldn't pay any mind to what an airport screener was wearing. Half the time I travel it starts in the wee hours of the morning anyway and I am half asleep. Hmmmm...was that airport screener wearing a full length skirt? How come she gets to be different? Give me a break.

The Teamsters union and the Canadian Council on American-Islamic Relations said Monday that they filed a religious discrimination complaint on behalf of Muse.
Now this is frivolous lawsuit, designed for maximum publicity. They have no grounds!
She accepted the job with the uniform code.
They have given her another job, at her same salary.
They are paying her for her suspension.

Women should not be forced to wear skirts. Especially in a position like screener, where they may have to "get physical".

I worked briefly for a NY/NJ area family owned department store (starts with "F" ends with "off") that required all women working the sales floor to wear skirts. I accepted the job knowing this, but there were times that I was very uncomfortable when I was climbing up a ladder to reach an item on a high shelf for a customer. I started wearing long skirts most of the time.

Having been through Pearson International many times, I can confidently say that the majority of females who work for CASTA do indeed wear slacks, though a skirt is an option for women (not sure about men). The skirts are definitely not required!

While I agree with you 100%, I'd like to point out that here, a human rights complaint/discrimination complaint is not a lawsuit, nor does it necessarily lead to one.

Whateve happened to the division of church and state? This is a religious issue, not a workplace issue. If she has a problem with the uniform because of her religion, I see no reason for the company to have to bend the rules for her.
