Police: Hershey Candy Looks Like Drugs
Police: Hershey Candy Looks Like Drugs
New mint packets being sold by The Hershey Co. look nearly identical to the tiny heat-sealed bags used to sell illegal powdered drugs like crack, heroin and cocaine and glorify the drug trade, a Philadelphia police official said. picked by dollyllama 2 years ago

Who's to say that the drug trade's use of bags doesn't glorify candy use?

This is a ridiculous statement by the police. So what if one packaging looks like another?

People are not going to start taking drugs because of the uber-cool packaging.

I'm going to hazard a guess and say that the drug packaging came first, and that's why everyone noticed a similarity. The idea that drug dealers would try to emulate a candy that hadn't even been marketed yet is beyond a stretch of logic.

Also, if you read the article (I'm guessing you didn't), the fear is that small children might eat a packet of coke (or heroin) that they find because it looks so similar to the Ice Breakers packet (which is entirely edible).

I agree, that is reason enough not to sell it.

Should the sale of smarties, M&M's,Sherbet and any other sweets and candy that resemble a drug be stopped just in case a child mistakes the real deal for a candy?

A better idea would be for parents to teach their kids not to eat anything that they don't know for sure what it is

If we're talking really young children, the ones who just swallow things willy-nilly,then they're too young to make the association between mint-bag and drug-bag and therefore the argument that these candy bags will make kids think real drugs are candy is kinda null and void.

Plus, when I used to partake in drugs as a younger man I never found any random baggies of smack, crack, hash or coke lying around the streets. And yes I did look!

There are plenty of parents out there using and being very careless with their drugs. You might be surprised how often kids get into the stashes of these folks even now.

I'm not sure the incidence would increase, I've no idea, no kids and don't use. I'm willing to bet Hershey redesigns this though so if you're going to buy some, do it now, it'll soon be a collectors item.

Every drug is mandated by the FDA to be uniquely identified by it's shape/color/text etc. It's to avoid confusion and allow people to be able to identify the pills.

These candies look like drugs and I would dare someone to try to get on an airplane with some of these dime-bags.

Sometimes it's not just impropriety but the LOOK of impropriety which is enough. Did Hershey do something wrong? Maybe, maybe not.. if people are debating it, they at the very least have the LOOK that they have designed a candy after an illegal street drug... which is probably enough for them to change it.

I agree, get these quick. They'll be collectors items.

(or know the difference) I think you're making points against yourself here, man.

I found some before. But we're not talking about some kid thinking they found some candy laying around on the streets; we're talking about parents who do this stuff and do it carelessly. If a kid reaches into a drawer and finds what appears to be their new favorite gum they're going to be like "aw sweet" and pop it in their mouth.

You've been on plime long enough to see the headlines with kids taking pot to school, taking and overdoseing on various drugs; this is a problem.

I agree with them on this, they need to repackage this stuff.

I think that's far too broad a generalization for this particular case. M&Ms, Smarties, and other small roundish candies are designed that way to be easier to eat. Their resemblance to drugs (pills) is generic and in all likelihood coincidental . THIS is a candy that looks JUST LIKE a specific drug packaging and doesn't seem to be designed to make the candy easier to eat, or even more tasty.

ALL of that aside, (even the idea that there is some drug out there that you know of that looks/tastes like Sherbet) I would HOPE that common sense would make you tend toward protecting small children from possibly killing themselves by ingesting dangerous drugs rather than marketing new zany ways to eat sugar.

They may look like nickel bags, but by no means do they "glorify the drug trade" like police say. The Cocaine energy drink does. This does not.

Honey looks like hash oil. Somehow we get by despite the resemblance.

Does anyone remember the cold medicine that looked exactly like red-hots(the small red cinnamon candy)?

I got fooled by that once, but was smart enough to spit out the pill when it didn't taste like cinnamon.
