Yes stem cells, including those taken from embryos which would be otherwise thrown out should be fully researched.

Ethical questions be damned. The catholic church has been against every scientific endeavour pursued. Medical technology has been exceptionally looked on as evil. Autopsies were looked on as the work of the devil. Heck any sort of healing at all was often looked on as Evil; as man trying to change God's plan.

The church even stated that air conditioning was a sin in the early days of research on how to produce cold temperatures.

No, the catholic church and all religions have no right to put their two cents into such issues.

It looks like the whole thing is moot, however.

With last month's announcement that scientists have successfully turned skin cells into stem cells... the need for embryonic stem cells is apparently no more.
