Faking cosplayers disable Japan's first Maid Taxi service for the disabled
Faking cosplayers disable Japan's first Maid Taxi service for the disabled
The Maid Taxi was a clever concept - until hordes of "Otaku" cosplayers from all over Japan swamped the service, displacing those genuinely disabled people the Maid Taxi's were designed to serve. picked by mitzuzake 2 years ago

I take it "Otaku" is Japanese for "Assholes"?

This is the first time I've heard the term "cosplayer". Is this a new word for anyone else or am I hopelessly out of touch?

Since it is illegal for able-bodied people to use vehicles designed for the disabled, shouldn't these people be fined into poverty for this?

You're not alone AND you're out of touch. :) I'm in my late 30's but I am familiar with it...thanks to CSI, Psych, Reno 911 and a few other TV shows that have mentioned the term if you pay close attention.

My wife just heard the term "Flash Mob" for the first time the other day too on CSI..and she is younger than me..so you certainly aren't alone when it comes to some of the latest fads.

Just one question on the article....why are the cosplay folks a problem for the service? They're still making tons of cash..I would think they'd just step it up to keep up with demand...supply and demand baby, that's the American Dream..oh wait..it wasn't in America. :) If this were America they'd ask for proof of handicap and charge you double if you didn't have it...and I'm sure the cosplayers would still pay for it!

Sorry all... "cosplay" is short for "costume play", people dressing up as their favorite anime characters. Popular in Japan, here not so much - thankfully.

Otaku still means asshole though, right?

Just a little elaboration... the law in Japan forbids vehicles modified for use by the handicapped to be used by those who are not. Kind of like renting an ambulance as a prom limo (though that would be cool). Why make money just to pay the fines?

Technichally, it means fanatic. Some idiots use it to say that they're fans of 'japanese culture'.
And Mitzuzake, if you ever go to an anime convention, you'll see that cosplay is pretty big here too. Hell , I even did it myself, though I had other reasons for doing so than most people.

Mostly because it's private, but if you wish, I did it because it's the only way I could be assured that dressing up as my gender rather than my sex wouldn't get me lynched. (And there was no chance that someone I know would be there.)
