Dropping Out Of The Electoral College
Dropping Out Of The Electoral College
The Electoral College of the US has it proponents and its detractors. One possible replacement is the National Popular Vote (NPV). Maryland is the first state in the nation to pass laws to enact this system provided enough other states does likewise. picked by 2manyusernames 2 years ago

I hope other states follow this lead.

Yeah we are hella innovators so long as we are in the majority. Matters very little though, this state is so blue we ousted a perfectly good govenor (with the worst haircut ever) simply because he couldn't get slots passed and an upstart Irish Catholic Democrat mayor (who promised a lot but delivered little) was running against him, and guess what today sales tax went up 1%, yesterday cigarettes went up 1 dollar/pack and people are still going to Delaware and WV to put their saving is chrome plated boxes that sing in the key of C.

The small states will never go for it.

I would sooner support a split of the electoral delegates based on vote percentages.

Example:

Let's say you have 11 states with a total electoral vote count of 20. You need 11 votes to win. Each vote represents 1 million people.

State 1 has 10 votes and all the others have 1 vote.

If there is no electoral vote splitting you need only get 51% of the vote in state 1 and 51% of the vote in one other state to win. In essence by getting the vote of just 5,500,002 people you will win the election even if the other 14,499,998 people vote for the other guy. Splitting electoral votes based on vote percentages gets rid of this problem.

Don't forget, direct voting for Senators is a relatively new thing. A direct popular vote would be a huge blow to state's rights
