A Crescent Over Europe?
A Crescent Over Europe?
America & Europe have had close ties for more than a half a century. The common political and cultural values have helped keep us strong allies. That may change dramatically. Some estimates have Europe becoming predominantly Islam by the end of the century. What changes this will bring is questionable, but one thing is likely, Europe will not be friendly towards the US picked by 2manyusernames 11 months ago

Are you saying Europe currently likes the US?

That's a fascinating article there by Air Force Magazine, LOL.

In other armed forces news, some expert scientists predict that by the end of the century, the US will be so run over by 'immigrants', that no one will care about military and political world dominance anymore. Scary stuff..

Gammerus, I see that misonception is as hard on your side of the Antlantic that on mine. :) So let me make a couple of statement as a European...

1) A vast majority of Europeans love the US. We share almost exactly the same culture (music, movies, books, technology), go to the US on a regular basis and what happened 60 years ago is still *very* clear in our mind (I'm Belgian).

2) Left-wing parties are slowly loosing power but they still drive the majority of the medias. Also, most artists (at least those regularly shown ine the media) are bent towards the left. There is also a part of the middle-class called the BoBo's in French ('Bourgeois Bohème') who advocate leftish principles while living completely the other ways. These are the guys driving a 60k$ car while wearing a 'Che Guevara' t-shirt. In any case, socialist parties are very kind to the muslim people because they constitute a very large part of their votes (a situation not dissimilar to what happens in the US with the Jewish community).

4) The 'absolute political-correctness' of the european governments is slowly driving people mad. This year they had to remove the Christmas decorations from some of the official building here in Brussels to avoid offensing muslim people who do not celebrate Christmas!

5) Lighioana, where do you live? Here in Brussels you pass by more muslim than 'traditional europeans' in the streets. Especially during business hours... Maybe you've never met a muslim believer in your country but I can tell you that here you will rarely meet someone who is not muslim and is not worried about the muslim's ever groing influence.

So, gammerus, don't always believe what the media says. Probably 80% of the media people in Europe are voting for socialist parties. They nevertheless lost the elections in most European countries who now have leaders who are much more aware of the situation and want to reinforce the ties with the US (Merkel in Germany, Sarkozy in France, for example).

Oh and yes, the vast majority of European people is against the inclusion of Turkey in the European community. In all countries where a referendum was made, the answer was very clear.

Hope it give you a truer view of Europe. ;)

One of the east European countries.

OK, with no pressure on you to reveal where you are if you don't want to, would it be fair to say that you live in a country that was once part of the USSR, and so with religious freedom limited by the state?

Further, would it also be fair to say that you live in a country where there isn't a high influx of migrants?

Just trying to get a feel for what the conditions are like where you are as that's where the bulk of the rise in the numbers of Muslims in Western Europe comes from. So far I think there are very few European converts.

The immigrants tend to target the countries having the higher degree of social protection so it's mainly western Europe at the moment. But as the gap with eastern countries is hopefully closing, you'll probably get your share sooner than later.

Another problem is that we (westerners) expect muslims to dislike us. What says that we can't live together?

9-11? Madrid? Theo Van Ghog? I don't know of any westerner doing a terrorist attack against muslim interests. :)

looks like a good time for all the passive islamic believers, who constantly say the radicals are a minority, to step up and call on those radical islamics to stop putting their religion and culture in such a negative light.

Some terrorists were Muslim, that doesn't make Muslims terrorists. Instead of trying to make everyone afraid by telling them anti-americans are taking over Europe, maybe we should be examining the reasons someone would be anti-american. Arundhati Roy said in "Come September" that "anti-american" is a term used to discredit and inaccurately define a critic, I could not agree more.

This is very, very bad – when I read a headline like this the first thing I imagine is a lot of people moving uncomfortably on their chairs with no sensible reason whatsoever, then paranoia growing inside them and stupidity taking over rather quickly...
It’s just like saying non-whites will soon take over the US.

Recruiters for radical strains of Islam find their work made easy by the poverty and prejudice many young Muslims face.
Hey, Air Force Mag, maybe if you weren’t trying to scare people with claims like ‘15% of the population in Europe is muslim and that’s not very reassuring for us idiots who still don’t understand the basis of government we and europeans live in grants us the right to believe in whichever God we chose to’, then those young muslims wouldn’t feel like victims of prejudice and discrimination.

I'm from Southern Europe and I see muslims daily (I walk past a mosque on my way to work, though I have no idea when or where the women pray since I never saw any there), but about 75% of my countrymen and women still identify themselves as Roman Catholic, even the ones not going to Church regularly. The muslim community is really small. Plus, the majority of immigrants here (which of there are a LOT) come from Catholic origins as well (namelly eastern europe, south america and some african countries once colonized by europeans). I don't see the Islamic comunity grow per se, but as long as citizens respect others' rights (by law they must), I'm not even thinking about it.

I never heard a bad word from any muslim I passed by, or even a weird look. They know the right which allows them to worship God (Allah) in a predominantly Roman Catholic culture is granted to all of us who live in a secular government.

And why are they picking on Turkey? Turkey has a secular government, and they are very proud of it!

And sfo, dude... I've heard muslims explain how extremists are d**ks and don't even have the right to calll themselves believers, so some of us do chriticize them...

In the end, the branches expanding from the tree of Islamic faith are as many and as vast as the ones from the tree of Christianity - some are sensible and sadly some are also bulls**t and an offense to those of us who have a thinking brain.
