I don't think she's mean at all. I don't think I would have done the public humiliation thing, I just would have sold the car and let my son's incessant whining dig his own hole.

That rocks good for her! teach them early 0 tolerance.
I can use her as an example to my kids that I'm not that mean.

Kudos to her. She made rules, he broke them, she stuck to her guns. Maybe she'll inspire other parents to realize you can be strict and discipline your kids and the world will not end.

That son doesn't know it but she just did a very kind thing for him that will be with him the rest of his life.

We need more moms that know how to teach a "Real World" lesson.

I bet sonny believes her the next time she lays a rule down.

Yeah, even if a passenger left it in his car like he claims, he should man up and buy his own goddamn car.

Hambleton believes her son but has decided mercy isn't the best policy in this case.
so, wait. She's punishing her kid for something she doesn't even think he did?
I'd say "You're really strict. You're real overboard, lady."
I've driven people who had alcohol with them, so that they didn't drive drunk. Never leave the bottles anywhere near front seat, though.

Kids.

I told my son (lives with his mom) that I wouldn't co-sign for him a $30,000 car. He is 17. His mom is going through her 4th divorce (was never real good in math, but I can find this common denominator in this equation, but, I digress). So, she can't, I won't. Now I am the bad guy.

So, I send him $100 for Christmas for a Christmas present. So, he tells me that he doesn't want my stinking $, so I put a stop payment on it. Then he tries to cash it anyway. You can imagine what I am hearing from that little scenario.

Kids.

Good for her, when I was a teenager, I would have called her a b***h, but now I am grown with my own kid and realize that it was a good thing for her to do. Also sounds like something my mom would have done.

My fiancee and I did this to her middle son almost two years ago. We had bought a 91 Honda Accord from my brother who had babied it since he bought it brand new, and we had been teaching her son to drive in it.

Anyway, he kept getting in trouble in school, with the law, ect, so we said one more incident, and that's it, we are selling it.

About a month later, I was out of town one weekend, and my fiancee was in our bedroom cleaning, when she went outside for something. It didn't dawn on her at first, but then she realized the Accord was gone. Not finding her son, she jumped in her car, drove around the neighborhood, and found him taking his friends for a ride in the Accord.

She put a for sale sign in it the next day, and an ad in the paper on Monday. It was sold by the end of the week.

Not that it did any good. He continued to get in trouble and is now, at the age of 17, facing a 1st class felony for selling drugs at school.

It's one of those universal lessons... if the kid grows up smart, he'll realize his mom was right at the time. Then he'll tell his kids the same thing and they'll hate him for it, and so on and so on.

My understanding is that it's illegal to have an open container of alcohol in a vehicle (in the USA). That being the case, even letting a friend drink in his car while he drove would have been a violation.

I thought it was you couldn't have an open container of alcohol accessible from the front seat.
I know you can keep it in the trunk.

Either way, in retrospect, I probably should have had them put it in the trunk. Sure as hell I'm not gonna let them drink in my car. I don't want their drunk ass spilling it.

There is NO reason to EVER have an open container of alcohol in a car period.

I went throught he driving test last year and I believe that it is an OPEN container of alchohol. Be it beer can or bottle. That does not work in the case of a teenager. If you are caight with alchohol and you are driving you can be charger with posesion, unless there is an adult in the car...

*side note* i was at the store with my dad one time and the cashier was ringing up two cases of beer. As we were walking away I said "thanks for the beer dad, my friends and I are gonna have a kickin' house party." The cashier was mortified...hilarious
