I may not be an archbishop or anything remotely approaching that, but in my honest opinion, allowing areas where sharia law applies, will do the opposite to achieving social cohesion.

I am astonished, but find myself agreeing with Gordon Brown on this topic...

Even reading the original article, biased as it is, one can glean that the Archbishop's actual position is a sort of "selectable" system where they choose overlapping rules or rules that wouldn't impact British life in the slightest.

Hi acerougue26, I also take YOUR point that the archbishop was quoted out of context.
Although I find myself in agreement with his full and original statements, I must say that in this age of soundbytes and media hype, one has to be so very careful in what you say publicly (or even semi-publicly) because of the danger of being quoted incompletely.
And so I was suprised that the archbishop got himself into that situation in the first place.
Anyway, let me add that I do not think muslims should be bound any more or any less than anybody else, by the law of the land. I have the sense that, unfortunately, in the western world we are not giving the religion enough respect, while at the same time we are cutting adherents to that religion too much legal and social slack.
