Although I find myself in agreement with his full and original statements, I must say that in this age of soundbytes and media hype, one has to be so very careful in what you say publicly (or even semi-publicly) because of the danger of being quoted incompletely.
And so I was suprised that the archbishop got himself into that situation in the first place.
Anyway, let me add that I do not think muslims should be bound any more or any less than anybody else, by the law of the land. If what we want socially is a pattern of relations in which a plurality of diverse and overlapping affiliations work for a common good, and in which groups of serious and profound conviction are not systematically faced with the stark alternatives of cultural loyalty or state loyalty, it seems unavoidable.
You can still disagree with the principles of his actual statement, and you'll hear no complaint for me.

Even reading the original article, biased as it is, one can glean that the Archbishop's actual position is a sort of "selectable" system where they choose overlapping rules or rules that wouldn't impact British life in the slightest.

Also I'm downvoting because nowhere in the article does it say:
Muslims in Britain should be bound not by civil law, but by sharia law.
Rather the Archbishop says:
It's not as if we're bringing in an alien and rival system; we already have in this country a number of situations in which the internal law of religious communities is recognised by the law of the land ... There is a place for finding what would be a constructive accommodation with some aspects of Muslim law as we already do with some kinds of aspects of other religious law.
Here he's referring to Jewish courts that both the US and UK allow.
