I think the location of the check points could significantly impact the numbers. Lots of ranchers and farmers are in and out of their vehicle several times a day, going from field to field, through gates, feeding, checking water, etc, and are less likely to be belted in on the smaller, less trafficed roads. My uncle is a rancher, and when he's just crossing the county roads, he seldom buckles up. If he's going in to town, he always does.

Not saying it's right, just offering one possible explanation.

I lived in NJ where there are lots of pick-ups and very few farms. And I know lots of stupid people (not just ones with pick-ups) that don't wear their seat belts. I don't quite understand why.

I feel uncomfortable (and have a slight twinge of excitement) if I drive without a seatbelt, so ingrained is it in my psyche.

But then I can see that if it isn't so ingrained, it would feel the same, bar the excitment, to drive with one.

Doesn't make them right, of course.
