Before they could smell something burning, the odorless, toxic Carbon Monoxide produced by the fire would have knocked them out. The alarm is also a detector. Heh! (couldn't resist).

I go to a school where there is a pretty large deaf community. The doorbells in the dorms are blinking lights, as well as blinking lights and sound (for the hearing) for the fire alarms. I don't know, I just don't think smell would wake me up.

Have you ever smelled wasabi? It's that green horseradish stuff that you get with sushi. If you haven't smelled it, go put your nose close up next to it and take a whiff. That s**t'll wake up a corpse.
