The few times I've experienced de-escalation experts at work, they acted pretty much the same. As long as nobody acts stupidly, it's easier for both sides to spend a nice afternoon together.

Professional protesters know that they can't win if they're being dragged away by police force, and police know that if they are polite, people are more likely to obey.

Of course, there's always some dumbass to mess it up.
On either side.
