All the legal precedents notwithstanding, you'd think she could find a way to go quietly into that long good night if she really could take it no longer.

Absolutely ^ . If I were willing to go through the "agony" of filing suit in the legal system, I'd probably also be willing to just jump off a bridge or step in front of a train.
Or even take a handful of sleeping pills and wash it down with an expensive bottle of wine.
There are at least as many ways to kill yourself as there are ways to leave your lover.

i don't know, fellas ... it seemed to me that the woman wanted to find a method of early death that wasn't messy and traumatic to the people around her, as well as herself.

jumping in front of a train would quickly end your life with questionable painlessness, but that's one hell of a mess, that'll shut down the train system for at least a day, shock the neighboring community and your family for years. though, a legal and sanctioned euthanasia by doctor will grant a quiet death, and well allow your family to bury you by tradition and dignity.

such dramatic suicides are rather selfish. from these articles, i think the woman wants a respecting and dignified death, more than just having death by any means at all.

Maybe she's fighting for everyone else's right to die with the help of doctors. I mean, she sounds like she is going to do it anyway. I don't know about the laws in France, but what else do you lose besides your life insurance, when you take your own life?

I really don't understand why, I believe, the majority of people are ok with ending the suffering of animals by putting them down, but humans most suffer till they die by natural means.

It's really whacked, if you think about it.

I would certainly agree that this is more about the principle, as opposed to the act itself- I just hope she gets resolution and is able to die peacefully, relatively soon.

Interesting how we won't subject animals to long and prolonged suffering, yet, as humans, we must endure some of the worst and unimaginable suffering in the name of politics.

Sad indeed.

Most churches will tell you that if you committ suicide, you go to hell. They're against assisted suicide and anything to do with it. If any of the politicians, court offcials, etc. have one of these churchs then they are being threatened with their 'immortal soul' if they allow her.

She needs to just Do it. Stop asking permission. If France won't let her, there are other countries who will. I maintained before that a politician can't make a decision to allow you to end your life, there are too many arguments and counterarguments and it's simply just not a black and white situation.

She's gone to the President, she's gone to the courts, she's looking for permission... perhaps to be a 'champion for the cause'. People need causes to get behind, maybe the idea that she will help others helps her.

Either way, if it's really necessary for her to get it done, she'll do it.

It's not trying to be a champion, it's trying to get them to make it LEGAL. It's illegal to attempt suicide in most states. Seems absurd, but that's the legal system.

I think it's cruel that politicians get to determine if someone lives. It is NO business of the governments. And while I know a LOT of people who babble on about damnation and such, very few of them have been in the situation and dealt with the daily horrow of visiting a loved one who is miserable and suffering and no longer WANTS to live. I don't care what the religions say, forcing anyone to live through horrors is far worse sin than helping them die with dignity.

why do you all limit yourselves by only wishing for her death instead of praying that she lives pain free or something else. death is really not the cure all. if she could live and be happy she would probablly prefer that.

Are you sure?

What does it matter to her whether it's legal or illegal if she's dead? No, I still maintain she is trying to legalize it so that she has something she's leaving behind. Call it a Legacy. She has kids, she's been a schoolteacher, but she doesn't want this disease(?) to just kill her, she wants it to mean something.
