You can buy a slave for $50
You can buy a slave for $50
With $50 and a plane ticket to Haiti, one can buy a slave. There are more slaves on the planet today than at any time in human history. Adjusting for inflation, in 1850 a slave would cost roughly $30k to $40k. Today you can go to Haiti and buy a 9-year-old girl to use as a sexual and domestic slave for $50. picked by 2manyusernames 2 years ago

I don't know which is worse, that you can still buy a slave these days, or that said slave can be bought for $50. Outrageous!

Hmm, slavery sucks but I don't think that's a fact. Maybe absolute - not taking global population growth into account - but even that I'm not sure about.

Wouldn't it be nice to go buy a bunch of people and then go "okay, your only job is to get an education and go back and help your people"

lessee..I've got about 2k in the bank right now... that would get like 40 peeps.

it's a start?

Kinda reflects the low value society puts on human life these days. It seems more and more that human life means less to some people than material possessions.

I'm in for about the same amount too :) I wish I could in reality do something about things like this. It makes my heart heavy to read stories like this. I feel so impotent to do anything to change things.

i respect the want to release the slaves, but BUYING them is only supporting the problem. you release the slaves, but the traders still get your money for them. so they have the means and the drive to procure more slaves, for you to buy, for them to continue doing a lucrative business.

if you collapse the slave trade industry, that could have a better effect on stopping human trafficking. but i don't know of a realistic and effective method of doing that ...

I'm sure it's been said a thousand times, that in order to change the system, one must work within. Of course, I support and agree that purchasing is perpetuating to a degree -- but there is a reason for the infrastructure to exist as it is. --

Umm... like Restless said, this would just give the slave traders the opportunity to kidnap more slaves. We would just be supporting the system. Bother...

BTW, upvotes for Doggylives for making me look up "Impotent".
