I don't understand what's going on here?

Does he print his own checks or something? You can't just draw a check on any old thing.

Try going to a supermarket to buy a banana, and write out you routing number, account number, check number, date, amount, and signature on the peal. They will have you committed (to an insane asylum) under the reason: "Is bat-s**t crazy."

Actually- I had an accounting Prof who told us that you CAN write a check on anything you want. He then proceeded to tell us about the guy who wrote a check to the IRS on the shirt off his back.

This was in the late 80's though, so they may have changed the law.

This was my understanding too. I think I'll have to research this.

I suppose "back in the day" the method of accounting was simple enough that a check was just a fancier version of an IOU

There are 7 elements of a legal check. Any device that contains those elements CAN be accepted as a check, and will be legally binding.

That having been said, you have to get the bank to actually accept the check, which they are NOT legally bound to do.

I am really bummed that you got this story before me. It is from my hometown.

This brings back very vague memories of a man protesting something and doing it by writing a cheque on a pig.

Sorry I can't give you any more than that.
