Spanish nurses forced to wear skirts or face wage loss
Spanish nurses forced to wear skirts or face wage loss
Nurses in Cádiz, Spain, have been told that they have to wear a skirt if they want to earn a full wage. Those at the San Rafael Clinic who choose to wear trousers instead will lose a 30 € productivity bonus every month.

Sure, that makes perfect sense.
If percentage of visible skin is directly proportional to productivity. picked by teresag 2 years ago

This just doesn't seem reasonable at all.

I know you all just think you're being cute, but do you honestly think nurses are just brainless eye candy, or do you think that we are professionals who don't mind being considered sex playthings? Name another profession with a college degree (e.g., mine's a PhD) that is asked to endure this kind of sexist tripe. Then ask yourself if you want your life in the hands of a cutesy dumb blonde whose only asset is her tits.

Link changed. I didn't consider that a blog, but I see your point.

So it's part of a uniform. They're just going to be looking like very traditional nurses.

I don't see the problem with that. It's not like the nurses are required to work at that clinic. They can move to another one if they're dissatisfied.

They ARE just being cute, teresag. Relax.

I sense some major frustration from you over other people wanting to be 'taken care of' by someone like this:
But why? It seems like you're saying that your views are the same for anyone in the entire profession, and I don't really get where you are coming from.

Yes, I do speak for the profession. Nurses fight this stereotype daily. We are frequently sexually harassed and verbally abused, most often by physicians, on the job. The sexy nurse image promotes this kind of mistreatment and deemphasizes our knowledge and skills.

This is just ridiculous!! What is the advantage to having nurses wear skirts? I could understand a uniform change for hygenic or safety reasons, but neither of those apply to this situation.

I couldn't agree more.

I think blatant, horrid sexism still infiltrates most careers.

I have an MSc and ten years of solid experience, but some wet-behind-the-ears male will still get better job offers and wages. I've got a great boss now, but it wasn't easy to come by.

Either way, I say the male nurses be forced to wear skirts, too. If that was the case, I probably wouldn't be bothered about news such as this.

What's there not to get? The expectation, even if it's subliminal, that working women, particularly nurses are supposed to be ditsy sex objects, is not a fun one to have to live with every single working day.

Way to belittle an issue that dominates the working lives of billions of women every day.

I don't know, I see where both of you are coming from, but men are always going to view women sexually, it's completely unavoidable. It's not an excuse, but it doesn't do any good to deny the inevitability of it.

I always get embarrased when I get a really hot nurse in a skirt.. they have to put that lil cotton swab thing in me and do the squeeze and drip thingy And i just get excited and they giggle.. I dunno tho It wouldn't really matter if she was wearing pants(instead) or not wait.. what are we debating here? I say let them wear what they want.. sexiness is sexiness and professionalism is professionalism.. I wouldn't want a nurse thats mad b/c she had to wear a skirt to be handling me and mess something up... I'll be good and stop there..

I sense a nurses strike in Spain, real soon. Maybe the doctor's should wear skirts and hose for a while. Or perhaps they should wear a suit and tie for a more "traditional' looking doctor. No more scrubs for them either. I think the whole thing stinks. And to deduct pay??? Are they providing the uniform? Or the money to buy it? I didn't see it. Yes, they can quit and work somewhere else, but that is not the point. I hope those nurses do strike. See how fast the rules change back without them there. I love nurses! They are an awesome group of people.

*sigh*
I get it.
I got it the first time, too.

1)I don't live in Spain, so I'm not going to go over there and protest, and I'm pretty sure you're not either. Therefore, I can't really muster the energy to stand with my spiritual sisters-in-arms full of righteous umbrage over this. There's only so much angst I'm going to allow past my "okay, move along" filter.

2)It's stupid. This should go without saying, but if it makes you feel better, I'll say it again.

It's stupid.

Yeah, well I still think that the ones who live up to the stereotype don't really mind. I don't ever let one person speaking for many many more sway my thought process. That wouldn't make any sense if I did. Go make a petition if you really care this much.

What about when people belittle some other important cultural figure? Like, say, the presidency of the U.S., or baseball players with steroids, or police brutality and the subsequent public dissent, or blah blah blah etc. My point is that I'll take a crippled sponge bath from a hot blonde in a skirt over a whiny, anti-sex-symbol nurse any day of the week, and I don't care how uncomfortable that might ever make you or teresag or anybody else feel about it. Get over it.
