Mom pregnant with 18th child
The Duggar kids planned a big Mother's Day surprise for their mom this year. But the surprise was on them.

They should be called the Pringle family, Because once you pop you just can't stop.

Srysly though I'm all for big families and it's up to them what they do but why that many kids? Surely you can't give them all the necessary attention.

Each child learns to play both violin and piano.
Why not mix it up?

and...

“They thought they’d give their a mom surprise,” Jim Bob said. “But she gave them a surprise.”
Srsly? Is it really that big of a surprise that she's pregnant...again?

I grew up in a big family and it was amazing. And once you get in the groove, it's a lot easier than you think. I'd love to have that many kids.

I have seen a few shows on Discovery about this family. At first I thought they were ridiculous about having that many kids (this was back when they only had 16) but after watching the show, they are neat people. I am glad to see that Mrs. Dugger changed her hair (it was something awful).
They are really loving, caring parents. They have not been given anything from anyone that they didn't work for, they have no debt because Jim-Bob does not believe in it and their children (as you could see in the video) are VERY well behaved and respectful.

I say: congrats to them!

I've got 5 kids so our families pretty big but I just couldn't imagine being able to stretch my time/energy between 18 kids. I find it hard to give all mine the attention the need/deserve sometimes so I was just saying it must be easy to kinda get lost in a family this big.

Our dear planet is bursting at the seams and resources are being stretched and strained... and this woman thinks she should have 18 kids??

We're not in the 18th century anymore (or even the turn of the 20th), nor is America a third world nation. She doesn't need to have 18 kids as a way to ensure at least a few of her offspring make it to adulthood!

All I can say is "yikes."

I totally agree. My opinion is this is just completely irresponsible. There are currently 6 billion people on the planet. If everyone had this many children, the human population would explode to 54 billion in one generation. There are only so many resources to consume, and it may just be our excessive numbers that eventually cause our extinction.

2nded.

They are totally self supporting, and have a very strong family bond. Yes, the number is ridiculous, but they have the art of raising a big family down pat.

Given that there's 18 of them, statistically speaking, one can't guarantee that at least one or two of them won't grow up to be a burden on society, but I'm betting that there won't be. They are what they are, and make no apologies for it.

I have three children. The reason I have three, is because I did not want 4. Three is plenty for me. Five is plenty for doggylives. And so I am guessing 18 might be just another person to love in this family. I don't know what her limit is. I do know that it would take a special person to raise that many kids. A few of you mentioned being able to handle that many...well they are not all 2 and 3 they range in age from 1-20 so I am certain the older children are helpers. My daughter already does more than her fair share of helping me. It's all how you look at it.

It's not like she's having all these kids and drawing on welfare. She and her husband are supporting them entirely. I would rather this woman have 30 kids who are raised to be good citizens who contribute to society than to have one welfare mom give birth to one child and teach it to live off the system as well.

Crazieseans comment was no worse, in fact a lot tamer than a lot of comments made by higher level plimates on a regular basis.

I agree, Kudos to them for raising a family that seems to have it together. And they are self supporting and have not received mini-vans, and new homes like some of the parents that had multiples from one pregnancy (humans weren't meant to have litters).

I just couldn't imagine 1)having that many kids 2) giving birth to that many kids 3)being pregnant for most of my adult life. I just couldn't imagine and don't quite understand ones need to have a child a year.

Then again, I don't have any kids.

If they choose to have more, and raise them to be responsible citizens, and don't milk the welfare system, go for it. But I'm not really sure how I feel about this. I don't think they will stop at 18.

Where did I even suggest she's raising kids and using welfare?

I'm referring to the 200 year old Malthusian idea that food production can increase at a linear rate while population increases at an exponential rate. Our planet is full, most North Americans use WAY to many resources and these sorts of lifestyles and families aren't practical if we want to sustain ourselves as a species in the future.
