A Walk Through the Hard Drive Recovery Process Posted: 2 months ago by Bornbad
In computer circles a well known statement when it comes to hard drives is that it’s not a matter of “if” a hard drive dies but “when”.

First, it is not a good idea to ask for downvotes of another users post based on an opinion.

Second, it looks to me that this is an informative story. You may not like it, but it is a legitimate story.

« Bornbad : Please go f**k yourself. I don't post adverts. This is strictly an information post. If you want to take me on triple z, give it your best shot. I'm tired of you little pricks deciding on your own what is worth it and what is not!
Surely there's a better way of addressing someone than telling them to go f**k themselves dude. As for him deciding what it's worth on his own, that's kind of the idea of plime, everyone decides individually what something's worth. There's no need to try and bully people because they piss you off.

Sure, zzz's comment was misguided but he's relatively new here and I'm sure Jax would appreciate as much traffic on plime so he can keep the site going and pay the bills. If you talk to new people (or anyone) like that you're gonna put them right off the site.

C'mon dude, I'm sure you're better than all this "go f**k yourself" s**t you're doing lately,eh?

It went straight to a corporate website, which seemed like advertising to me.

From what the guy described, he may have wasted his money.

The first thing he should have done is open up the "external drive" casing, and removed the hard drive.

Then, he should have hooked it directly to the IDE or SATA interface on his motherboard, on interface #2 as a standalone (booting from interface #1).

Then, he should have used a good forensic data recovery tool, to scan the hard drive. Chances are, he would have got most of the data back.

I do this all the time, and 99% of the time, that's all it takes when a hard drive is "dead".

The rate for this service is between $100 and $200. The $200 includes a new hard drive.

Even if the drive doesn't spin up on it's own, I have ways of making it spin that don't cost anywhere near what these guys are charging.

As I said, 99% of the time, it can be recovered, and the charge usually doesn't exceed $200.

It's usually no more than 2 hours of my time.

I've lost many data due to hard disk malfunction, and have had friends pay as much as this story for practically no results, so I am suspicious of this post-as-advertising idea.

I'm not calling anyone any names, but this side of computing just feels like an underbelly.

Completely a subjective opinion.
