As for the matter at hand, many scientists across a large variety of fields agree that there is most likely intelligent life somewhere other than here and have for some time now. I fail to see why one astronomer from the Vatican can say the same and it's automatically news/makes the Vatican look like it's scientifically credible.

To strengthen its scientific credentials, the Vatican is organising a conference next year to mark the 200th anniversary of the birth of the author of the Origin of Species, Charles Darwin.
It seems to me the Vatican is getting ready to deal a big blow to creationism.

Yes and No, it was satirical. The catholic position is that life happens before conception. Using a condom is the same as choking a baby to death because you are killing sperm that are trying to become a baby.
